The casino room and these pages are for adults. The rule is simple, it is applied to everyone, and it is explained here in full.
Who may enter the casino room?
Only guests of eighteen years and over may enter the casino room, take a seat at a table or enter a tournament. This is the whole of the rule. Younger guests are welcome in the dining room until half past six, when accompanied by an adult, but the doorway to the casino room is closed to them at all hours.
There are no exceptions to the rule, and I would ask guests not to put the staff in the awkward position of declining one. We do not make allowances for a guest who is almost eighteen, for a guest who has a parent at the table, or for a guest who has travelled a long way. The rule is applied to everyone in the same manner, and without remark.
We apply it for the same reason that we keep the lamps lit: because it is the correct way to run the house. Card games are an adult pastime, the law sets the age and the people who work here would be uncomfortable doing otherwise. Those who return on their eighteenth birthday are given a seat by the window, with my compliments.
What identification do we accept, and why?
- A current driver's licence, passport or recognised proof-of-age card is accepted; photocopies and photographs on a telephone are not.
- Expired documents cannot be accepted, whatever the circumstances, and nobody is admitted on the strength of a promise to bring one later.
- Identification is checked by the host at the door and again by the dealer at the table whenever there is doubt.
- A guest without identification may still dine, since the dining room is open to everyone, but will not be admitted to the casino room.
- The rule exists because card games and the wheel are adult pastimes, and because the law places them in adult company.
- There is no online way to play, so nobody can bypass the door by using a telephone or a computer at home.
- If an account, message or website claims to offer games in the name of the house, it is not ours and should be ignored.
- Questions about the rule may be put to Liam Allen at the host's desk, and will be answered without any offence being taken.
