What does the house look like in the evening?

Photographs taken on ordinary evenings rather than special occasions, arranged roughly in the order a guest would meet them: first the street and the hall, then the dining room and the plates, then the tea room and, last of all, the casino tables under their shaded lamps.

About the pictures

How were these photographs taken?

Each photograph in this gallery was taken during an ordinary evening, with the permission of the guests who appear in it. None has been staged, and none has been retouched beyond a little extra brightness so that the dark corners of the dining room can be seen. If you notice a face you recognise, please tell them.

We have arranged the frames in the order that a visitor would meet them: the limestone frontage on Poynton Street, the front hall and its bell, the dining room under its timber ceiling, the kitchen and the plates, the tea room, and finally the casino room with its shaded lamps and green felt.

A photograph can show a table laid for supper or a stack of chips, but it cannot show the quiet that settles over the room when the bell has been struck. For that you will need to visit, and I would be glad to see you.

Photographs of guests are never published without their consent, and any guest may ask for a picture to be removed at any time. Write to the address on the contact page and the image will be taken down within a day.

Should you wish to see a particular corner of the house before you book, ask Felicity Morrison at the host's desk. She keeps a folder of prints beside the reservations book, and she is glad to show it to anyone who asks, whether or not they have a table for the evening.
